People had to leave Earth and move to the Moon because they could never win the war with the aliens. That being said, they still want to bring people back, no matter what, which is why they keep sending groups of troops to Earth.

Now, though, robots called humanoid droids are sent to the planet instead of people. You will be in charge of one of them. NieR Automata is mostly played through fast, changing fights with a lot of different alien technologies and troops. Everything works like a shooter game: you can jump over enemies’ heads and hit them over the head while doing so, block attacks, roll around on the ground, and do a lot more.
